5 Easy DIY Projects to Do with Kids Using Real Tools
Last updated: June 14, 2026The best way to teach kids to build is to actually build something. Here are five simple projects that use real tools, teach real skills, and create real pride — all doable in an afternoon with basic materials.
1. Build a Birdhouse from a Kit
Tools needed: kids hammer, safety glasses
Materials: Pre-cut birdhouse kit (available at any craft store), small nails, wood glue
Skills learned: Hammering, following instructions, spatial assembly
Birdhouse kits come with pre-cut, pre-drilled pieces that snap together. Kids use a real hammer to tap in small finishing nails while you hold the pieces steady. The result is a functional birdhouse they can hang outside and watch birds use. This project is perfect for ages 5+.
2. Measure Everything in Your Room
Tools needed: kids tape measure
Materials: Paper, pencil, ruler
Skills learned: Measurement, numbers, comparison, recording data
Challenge your child to measure every piece of furniture in their bedroom and record the dimensions. How wide is the bed? How tall is the bookshelf? Which is longer — the desk or the dresser? Then have them draw a floor plan to scale. This project works for ages 3+ and naturally teaches math concepts.
3. Tighten Everything That is Loose
Tools needed: kids screwdriver, kids wrench
Materials: None — just things around the house
Skills learned: Mechanical thinking, clockwise/counterclockwise, tool selection
Walk through the house together and find everything that is loose — cabinet handles, drawer pulls, outlet covers (with the breaker off), bike seat bolts. Kids love the treasure hunt aspect, and they feel genuinely useful fixing real problems. Ages 5+.
4. Build a Picture Frame
Tools needed: kids tape measure, kids hammer, safety glasses
Materials: Popsicle sticks or thin wood strips, small nails, wood glue, paint
Skills learned: Measuring, cutting (with supervision), assembly, finishing
Measure and build a simple picture frame. Kids measure the photo, cut (or have you cut) the frame pieces to size, glue and nail them together, then paint or decorate. The finished product goes on the wall — real proof they built something real. The Handy Famm DIY Picture Frame Bundle comes with everything needed. Ages 5+.
5. Create a Tool Skills Obstacle Course
Tools needed: full kids tool set
Materials: Scrap wood, nails, screws, nuts and bolts, things to measure
Skills learned: All tool skills, speed, confidence, fun
Set up stations around the yard or garage: Station 1 — hammer 3 nails. Station 2 — measure 3 objects. Station 3 — screw in 2 screws. Station 4 — tighten 2 bolts. Time each run and let kids try to beat their personal best. This works great for birthday parties and playdates too. Ages 5+.
